It's that time of year again (May to July) - Tarpon season is in full swing in Tampa Bay all the way down to Anna Maria Island - Bean Point! If you're an avid angler like me, you understand the sheer thrill of battling a tarpon. Their acrobatics, strength, and sheer size make tarpon fishing a pinnacle experience for many fishing enthusiasts. With tarpon season upon us, it’s essential to gear up with the right tools. In this article, I'll walk you through my personal experience, recent fishing trips, and why the Shimano Saragosa 8000 paired with the Tsunami Carbon Shield rods is my go-to setup for targeting these silver kings. I’ll also touch on some fishing tips, tackle recommendations, and why having the best rod and reel can make or break your success on the water.
Every year, as tarpon season approaches, the excitement builds. If you haven’t hit the water yet or haven’t been keeping up with social media, now is the time to prepare. Tampa Bay, my go-to fishing spot, has seen a significant influx of tarpon in recent weeks. In just the last few days, we’ve had an incredible run of action, and the rush isn’t slowing down.
During our last three trips, my buddy Jake and I managed to hook up with 22 tarpon, landing 9 of them. Now, that may not sound like much, but if you’ve ever tried your hand at tarpon fishing, you know it’s no easy feat. These fish are tough to land, and their unpredictable nature keeps you on your toes.
When you’re chasing these silver kings, having the right gear is critical. Trust me, I learned the hard way after losing one of my favorite setups last week. We hooked a fish with the rod still in the holder, and in my haste, I tried to grab the rod with one hand. Big mistake. The rod got snatched right out of my hands, disappearing into the deep. It was an expensive lesson, but one that reinforced the importance of having a reliable setup that you can trust in high-pressure situations.
After losing my gear, I had to replace it with a tried-and-true combo. The setup I swear by is the Shimano Saragosa 8000 reel paired with Tsunami Carbon Shield rods. This combination has served me well for years, and after trying various setups, this is the one that has never let me down.
The Shimano Saragosa 8000 is a beast. Not only is it durable and well-built, but it’s also incredibly smooth, making it ideal for handling the long runs and jumps of a tarpon. Shimano is known for its drag systems, and this reel is no exception. The sound of the drag as a tarpon peels off line is one of the most exhilarating experiences in fishing. It’s reliable, it’s tough, and it’s designed to handle big fish like tarpon, kingfish, cobia, grouper, and big snook either around structure or off the beach.
What I love about the Saragosa is its versatility. I’ve used it for multiple species, but it really shines when targeting tarpon. With a strong drag and a capacity to hold enough line for those lengthy runs tarpon are known for, it gives me the confidence I need on the water. We typically spool it with 50-60 lb braid so you can get distant on your cast and still put a lot of pressure on the fish. Yes, it's a great casting rod as well, Jake uses to throws buck tails to catch big snook.
Now, let’s talk about the Tsunami Carbon Shield. This rod complements the Saragosa perfectly. It’s an 8-foot, fast-action rod rated for 20 to 50-pound mono line weight and 30 to 65-pound braid. Whether I’m live baiting, dead baiting, or casting lures like flare hawks, this rod has the backbone to handle it all. One of the key features I love about the Tsunami Carbon Shield is its balance. It’s light enough to cast for extended periods without wearing me out, but still has the strength to muscle in a big tarpon when needed.
The fast action of this rod means it’s sensitive enough to feel those subtle bites but still provides the power to set the hook and keep the fish pinned. If you’re serious about tarpon fishing, investing in a rod like this is a no-brainer.
Whenever I need new gear, I have a few go-to shops around Tampa Bay that never let me down. One of my favorites is Palmetto Bait & Tackle. Not only do they have a great selection of reels and rods, but their customer service is top-notch. Palmetto Bait & Tackle recently became a Shimano dealer, so it was the perfect spot to grab my reel. We prefer to support local when we can verses buying online.
For the rod, I headed over to Gator Gems, another favorite of mine, where I picked up the Tsunami Carbon Shield. It’s always nice to support local shops, especially when they carry high-quality gear that can stand up to the rigors of this type of fishing.
Another great local place is

There are countless setups out there, and every angler has their preference. Some guys are into artificial lures, others prefer live bait, and some even fish with dead bait. Whatever your style, you need a rod and reel that can handle the strength and speed of a tarpon.
For me, the Shimano Saragosa 8000 and Tsunami Carbon Shield spinning rod have proven themselves time and time again. Whether I’m fishing live bait or tossing lures, this setup has the versatility, strength, and durability to handle whatever a big tarpon throws at it. Plus, it’s smooth enough that I can let clients use it without worrying about equipment failure.
In my years of tarpon fishing, I’ve learned one thing: investing in quality gear pays off. The Shimano Saragosa 8000 and Tsunami Carbon Shields are hands down the best tarpon fishing rod and reel combination I’ve ever used. They’re tough, reliable, and perfectly suited for the challenges of tarpon fishing. If you’re in the market for a new setup, give this combo a try—you won’t be disappointed.
